Pakistan and Visa Team Up to Deliver Aid
In 2009, 1.5 million people fled their homes in the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan to escape ethnic fighting, and sought refuge in other parts of the country. Pakistan’s National Identity Agency (NADRA) was tasked with the challenge of getting them financial support quickly.
“Visa is a trusted logo and system”
Working with Visa and United Bank Limited, NADRA loaded Visa Prepaid cards with funds that could be used immediately. Visa helped install terminals in local businesses that increased access to necessities for IDPs and supported local merchants. The effort had the long-term consequence of creating financial inclusion for people who had not previously been part of the formal economy.
